Blog 34: Cabinetry update

The build of our interior joinery continues… the kitchen, pantry and garage cabinets are a major part of our overall project as we have chosen to up-cycle old native timber (rimu) cabinets, and this has been made possible with lots of support from family and friends. They look amazing finished in natural oil.

John and Alessandra are doing a great job and we are on track, with our garage, pantry and B&B flat kitchen cabinets all nearly ready to install, and we are now starting work on the main kitchen cabinets.

Alessandra has also made Macrocarpa frames for our switchboards and they look awesome installed and are being plastered in as we do the finishing plaster coats on the internal walls.

Alessandra is doing a huge amount of sanding and oiling for our cabinets and for our ceilings, using beautiful natural oils supplied by Naturalhouseco. Every sheet of ply for the ceilings is also being oiled before it goes up, so the oiling operation is ongoing..

As noted in our Joinery update blog post back in May, some of the joinery work is also outsourced to local joiners.

We have John and David at Hortop and Sons laminating our Rimu Benchtops and our Matai window sills. And we have Tom, Shane and the team at Parkhill Joinery making our doors and door frames and constructing a couple of new cabinets; one wall unit for our B&B flat kitchenette and a frame for our main kitchen stove and hob, all in recycled Matai and Rimu we have supplied.

Work on our cabinets and interior joinery is all on track at time of writing

  • We have dropped off the door handles and mechanisms into Parkhill today so they can be fitted to our doors

  • We have all of our Matai window sills from Hortop’s on-site and we are now in progress measuring, cutting, oiling and fitting them

  • We are in progress sanding and oiling the garage cabinets in preparation for their installation

  • We already have our first cavity sliding door pocket from Parkhill installed and I am picking up another tomorrow morning to be installed in our B&B flat bathroom

  • We start work on the main kitchen island cabinet next week

I will post another joinery update with more pictures of the finished articles when we are further into installation of the cabinets, benches and internal doors and start plastering them in.
